LA County Election Preview (Judges Included)

With a goal of covering all of SoCal (We are named SoCal Political News), I figured that this would be a good time to do a preview of important races to watch in LA County. Here is a brief breakdown of two of the more interesting races along with some information about the judges on the ballot.

San Francisco County DA Moves to Run for LA County DA

In one of the more bizarre instances of carpetbagging, former San Francisco County District Attorney George Gascon has moved to Los Angeles County and is running for District Attorney down here. Incumbent District Attorney Jackie Lacey is the first Black District Attorney in the history of Los Angeles County. Lacey is facing a very tough re-election campaign. Rounding out the race, we have Rachel Rossi a former public defender.

If you would have asked me yesterday, I would have put my prediction behind Jackie Lacey to win this race in fairly convincing fashion. She is what many would consider to be the most moderate candidate in this race. However, news earlier broke that her husband pulled a gun on Black Lives Matter protestors in the couples front yard. This could potentially sway votes that have not yet been cast.

Who Will Make it to November in Race to Replace Katie Hill

Katie Hill resigned her seat from Congress after facing a media firestorm over alleged improper relations with staffers. A lot of candidates are running and to make matters more confusing, one race is to fill the expired term up until January 2021 and the other race is to make it to the November run-off election.

Here are the list of candidates for both races:

Unexpired Term

Robert Cooper III (D)- University Professor
Getro F. Elize (D)- Patient Resource Worker
Mike Garcia (R)- Small Businessman/Father
Kenneth Jenks (R)- Telecommunications Expert
Steve Knight (R)- Small Business Owner
Courtney Lackey (R)- Mother/Businesswoman
David Lozano (R)- Attorney
Daniel Mercuri (R)- Business Owner/Father
F. David Rudnick (D)- Business Owner
Christy Smith (D)- California Assemblywoman/Mother
Cenk Uygur (D)- Progressive Journalist
Anibal Valdez-Ortega (D)- Attorney/Community Organizer

Regular Primary

Otis Lee Cooper (NPP)- Legal Defense Investigator
Robert Cooper III (D)- University Professor
Getro Franck Elize (D)- Patient Resource Worker
Mike Garcia (R)- Small Businessman/Father
Chad “St. Michael” Henry (NPP)- Retired Federal Employee
Kenneth Jenks (R)- Telecommunications Expert
Steve Knight (R)- Small Business Owner
David Lozano (R)- Attorney/Business Owner
Daniel Mercuri (R)- CEO
George Papadopoulos (R)- Businessman/Author/Speaker
Christy Smith (D)- California Assemblywoman/Mother
Christopher Smith (D)- Documentary Filmmaker
Cenk Uygur (D)- Progressive Journalist
Anibal Valdez-Ortega (D)- Attorney/Community Organizer

With a field this large, you could see one candidate win the race to fill the unexpired term and two totally different candidates advance to the November General Election.
