The 25th Senate District falls within the boundaries of Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County. Anthony Portantino (D) is the incumbent and has held the seat since 2016.
This district shows the following party registration for the three largest political groups (the source is http://www.l2political.com):
Republican- 24.6%
Democrat- 43.7%
NPP- 26.2%
We saw one of the strongest possible Republican challengers run for the seat in 2016 (Michael Antonovich) and fall short. Here are the 2016 primary results:
Chris Chahinian (D)- 6.8%
Teddy Choi (D)- 5.7%
Katherine Perez-Estolano (D)- 14.4%
Anthony Portantino (D)- 26.8%
Phlunte Riddle (D)- 6.7%
Michael Antonovich (R)- 39.5%
216,825 ballots were cast in this race. The numbers didn’t look good with the loan Republican finishing under 40%.
This all proved to be a moot point because Anthony Portantino did not draw an opponent for this race. He still received 182,319 for this race in spite of no other names appearing.
With a district that has almost a 25% Republican registration number, I was surprised to see this. We have analyzed races in areas that have a Republican registration of under 10%; however, these races still had at least one Republican challenger.
