2020 Primary Analysis: 67th Assembly District

The 67th Assembly District falls entirely within the boundaries of Riverside County. Melissa Melendez (R) is the incumbent in this race. Melendez has held the seat since 2012 when she won an all Republican battle for the seat.

This district shows the following party registration for the three largest political groups (the source is http://www.l2political.com):

Republican- 39.9%
Democrat- 31.1%
NPP- 22.3%

Melendez faced a lone challenger in 2018. Here are the result for the June 2018 race:

Michelle Singleton (D)- 32.9%
Melissa Melendez (R)- 67.1%

We saw a total of 80,563 ballots cast in the primary. In November, Muratsuchi won by a margin of 60.9% to 39.1%.

This does appear to be one of the safer Republican seats. The seat is an open seat in 2020, which allows for a new field of candidates. Here are the March 2020 results:

Jerry Carlos (D)- 35.3%
Steve Manos (R)- 14.2%
Nick Pardue (R)- 5.7%
Kelly Seyarto (R)- 27.5%
Jeremy Smith (R)- 17.2%

111,805 ballots were cast in this race. The numbers indicate that Republicans are in strong position here.

We will now see a matchup between Jerry Carlos (D) and Kelly Seyarto (R). Carlos has a background in public safety and Seyarto is the Mayor of Murrieta.

The numbers make this seat a virtual lock for Republicans. I predict that Kelly Seyarto wins in November.
